Zanskar White Water Rafting with sightseeing7 Nights , 8 Days ( LDK/Rf-Zns )
Our "special" yearly feature drives through most of Zanskar and Ladakh, monasteries, palaces, villages, hikes and travel to one of the most surreal places on the planet. The trip begins with a flight over the Himalayas into the Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh in the state of Jammu & KashmirBest Time: June to Sept.
Day 1 : Leh- Kargil 7 - 8 hrs
The drive to Kargil over the Fotu La Pass at 14,000 ft. is spectacular. Enroots, we stop for lunch at the Lamayuru monastery that belongs to the 'Red Hat' sect and capture the imposing moonscape on our cameras. Also, we will stop at the stone statue of the Maitreya and/ future Buddha at Mulbek. Overnight stay at Kargil hotel.
Day 2 : Kargil - padum 11 - 12 hrs
A spectacular drive past Panikar and Parkachik, a drive worth a thousand words and maybe even more, with magnificent views of the Nun and Kun massifs (7000 metres), hanging glaciers and large meadows. We drive all the way past the Suru valley up till Rangdum Gompa (12,000 ft) and stop for a lunch break and then continue with our journey toPadum. We drive over the Pensi La (14,500 ft), which enables grand views of the Zanskar peaks at the bottom of which is the Drung Durung glacier that feeds the Zanskar river, 40 km below.
Day 3 : Karsha - Stongday - Zangla sightseeing 6 - 7 hrs
Full day Zansker valley sightseeing,after breakfast visit some most beautiful and amazing monastery of Zansker Valley.At Zanskar , like the rest of the Ladakh , there are many beautiful and old monasteries like the monastery of Sani, Phugtal, Bardan, Karsha, Stongday.
Karsha (The Karsha monastery, like every big and majestic monastery in Ladakh and Tibet, Karsha is built like a fortress and defiant against the Hillside. It is the largest monastery in Zanskar.Gonpa was founded by translator Phagspa Sherab from Zanskar.At present, it is the largest Gelukpa monastery with more than 90 monks) Then Stongday and
Zangla (Lying 13km in the north east of Padum, the road continues along the plain above the sunken gorge of the Zanskar River, narrowing as it approaches Zangla, the ancient capital of Zanskar. The ruins of Zangla Fort appear high on a rickety wooden suspension bridge to enter Zangla village) O/N camp at Zangla beside Zansker river.
Day 4 : Zangla - Nyarak 4 - 5 hrs
Today the thrilling and adventures rafting begins. After breakfast pack up and get moving for about 25 km on the river & enter the canyon to reach Nyarak(3286m; 10,780ft; 3 hrs). This is a grade 3 section and warms you up for the rafting that is to follow in the days to come. At Hanumil, the last village, we enter a breathtaking canyon. The banks of the river now give way to mountain walls that rise thousands of feet above you. We run some terrific rapids today, stop for lunch, then raft some more before calling it a day and setting up camp below the Nyarak village. This campsite is one of the few sites in the canyon where one can camp.
Day 5 : Nyarak - Chilling 4 - 5 hrs
Today 40 km rafting section takes us from Nyarak to Chilling (3190 m; 10,465 ft; 4 - 5 hrs including scout and lunch) through the core of the Zanskar. A classic white water day with continuous Class III rapids, and a few Class IV rapid where the river squeezes between a gap of about 18ft known as the GATE. We stop for lunch near a huge waterfall and continue to the confluence of Markha River with the Zanskar. Rock formations, spires and an amazing palette of colors add to the trip today. After packing camp, we raft to Chilling. The gorge narrows in on the river - this indeed is a Grand Canyon in its own right. We stop for the day to pitch camp at chilling village.
Day 6 : Chilling - Sangam - Leh 5 - 6 hrs
We raft 35kms of Class III/IV white water from Chilling to Nimo (3154 m; 10,345 ft; 3-4 hrs) today. We raft past the village of Chilling and exciting rapids as the Zanskar plunges out of the canyon to meet with the Indus at Nimo. We end our trip at the confluence of the Zanskar with the Indus. Drive an hour back to Leh O/N hotel at Lah.
Day 7 : Leisure or souvenir day at Leh. Evening complementary culture program at Hotel
Last day is a free day for you souvenir shopping or free walk around the city. You will escorted to visit Shanti Stupa on demand. In the evening, there will be a cultural show.
Day 8 : Fly back to Delhi
Morning, transfer to the Leh airport for your flight to Delhi. It is a spectacular flight of one hour by around noon you reach to your Delhi hotel. If time allows, we can also organize a small sightseeing of the city.
